Chuck Westbrook's Blog: How to Get Our Huge Group to Visit Your Blog

  • Dani · 1 year ago
Yay! I can't wait! I really think that a lot of people are going to be helped by this, and it's a great way to find new blogs.
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Dani, So glad, Dani. Thanks for your enthusiasm and participation.
  • Elizabeth Marie · 1 year ago
I am SO excited for this to begin. Not only are we using the collective voice of bloggers everywhere to push new ideas we are also using said voice to promote what (hopefully) we all believe to be worthwhile and engaging content to the masses.
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Elizabeth Marie, And beyond that, even, there's a chance that we can help making blogging less intimidating for those masses.
  • Meredith Gould · 1 year ago
Great to see this post pop up. I was wondering when we're going to start this grand experiment. Excited/nervous about possibly having folks visit my blog, so I'm glad you pointed out that "we won't always agree." Thanks so much for doing this!
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Meredith Gould, You are very welcome. Thank you.
  • Jody Whitesides · 1 year ago
I think it's a great experiment and it will be a wonderful thing to see what happens. Looking forward to it.
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Jody Whitesides, Thanks, Jody. Thanks for being involved and for the kind words.
  • Roy Scribner · 1 year ago
I'm looking forward to this! I think the randomness of the process is what's most exciting - I'm sure you'll pick some blogs that I otherwise never would have come across.
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Roy Scribner, Another person who is approaching this with the right mindset. I'm going to try to encourage everyone to embrace reading something outside of their normal interests.
  • Mark · 1 year ago
If, as you hope Chuck, this develops into community we can all interact and learn from each other and discover blogs on a diverse range of topics. The blog(s) chosen are just the centrepiece, the other participants have so much to gain. I'm looking forward to it immensely.
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
    @Mark, Thanks Mark--that's the hope.
  • Stephen · 1 year ago
What about a voting/nomination system? Once you have some members set up we all nominate three blogs on the list we find interesting. At the end of the month the nominations are tallied up and the blog with the most gets the spotlight?

Just an idea. It might be a lot to set up and carry out manually. I don't have the PHP knowhow to make an app like that. Maybe somebody in the community does though.

Probably your way is the best to start it out though. Please let me know if I can help.
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Stephen, That's one option I've considered, but it's so far beyond my ability to execute, I'm writing it off for now.

Also, I think if we can just organically find some good blogs and filter them through a panel, it will prevent anyone from gaming the system.
  • dlyn · 1 year ago
I am really looking forward to seeing the first one - it's very exciting!
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@dlyn, I'm looking forward to it--I'm ready to see this crew in action.
  • Mike Figliuolo · 1 year ago
    Chuck,

I forget what you told me - was it cash only or is money order okay? Also, can you resend the address you want it sent to? Was it your home or your private PO Box. Thanks. I can't believe you're picking me as the first one for only $17.95! What a deal!

    Mike
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Mike Figliuolo, Ha! You're going to get me in trouble with everyone if you talk like that...
  • Joel Libava · 1 year ago
    Chuck,
Just put one foot in front of the other.
This gig will work exactly like it is supposed to...
It will all work out fine.
    Joel Libava
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Joel Libava, Thanks, Joel. That's precisely what I need to hear right now.
  • Linda (minnemom) · 1 year ago
Excited to get started with this! Your "What all great blogs have in common" list is excellent. I'll be self-assessing my own blog with regard to those points. Thanks for sharing it.
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Linda (minnemom), You're very welcome. I hope everyone takes this project as a way to learn how to improve their blogs too.
  • CJ · 1 year ago
Chuck. I think the real exciting thing is that here at last we have a genuine example of people power - "ordinary" people getting together and doing something for themselves. Okay, so you're the boss, but hey, we can find out where you live, if we have to.

More seriously, one blog featured per two weeks=26 blogs a year, which is fine whilst it's relatively small, but a good way of expanding the oportunities (and perhaps giving readers a welcome choice) could be to add (initially broad) categories as the whole thing snowballs, as I think it well might. What do you and these other guys think?
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@CJ, That's a part of the plan. I want to make sure we have sufficient mass to remain effective even after splitting into categories. Also, this is about all I can handle at the moment. : ) And I may be the boss, but I'm certainly ordinary.
  • Mike Figliuolo · 1 year ago
Disclaimer - Chuck is awesome and a truly upstanding citizen. My last comment was only designed to make the milk come out of his nose when he laughed at it. I hope EVERYONE knows I am a jokester. ;)
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Mike Figliuolo, (Thanks, Mike. The money's on the way.)
  • Elizabeth Marie · 1 year ago
Clearly Mike Figliuolo is going to be the lighthearted comedic of the group. :-p
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Elizabeth Marie, Yes, sending money to me is a silly idea. None of you should do it.
  • Caroline · 1 year ago
This is sounding more and more fun with each post! Can't wait to see the results and find some new and interesting blogs to read!!!
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Caroline, Hearing that it's getting more fun as we go for you is great. That's a super compliment.
  • Paul C · 1 year ago
I think your criteria for selection is commendable. Having a rubric like this will enable your selections to be more objective. Best wishes.
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Paul C, Thanks, Paul. It's going to be subjective by necessity, but at least I can prepare people for what I'll be looking for.
  • Tiffany Monhollon · 1 year ago
So... have you had to buy more hosting space yet???

Congrats on the success of the project so far! Let me know what I can do to help out.
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Tiffany Monhollon, Not yet, but Mike up there will surely foot the bill. ; )
  • Marcia Hoeck · 1 year ago
    Chuck,
Love your list of what makes a good blog -- great post, whether you're choosing a blog for your project, or any of us are just trying to make ours better. With all this enthusiasm behind you, what happens from here on has just got to be interesting.
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Marcia Hoeck, Thanks, Marcia--I hope it proves to be a helpful tool for many, myself included.
  • Mike Figliuolo · 1 year ago
@Elizabeth Marie I prefer to be the brooding dark sardonic jester. Lighthearted is so passe (and gauche to boot).

And why aren't you on twitter? All the cool kids are doing it (even Chuck!).
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
    @Mike Figliuolo, "Even Chuck!" Thanks?
  • Fancy · 1 year ago
After reading the list above, I hope to heck you don't pick me! I'm just along for the ride. Looking forward to Monday.
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
@Fancy, Ha! Why do you say that, Fancy?
  • Anya · 1 year ago
Ha, my "scientific" way of choosing important things at random is to throw darts, however, this method does leave lots of holes in things (including the programmer once, oops). Can't wait to see these blogs! And @Elizabeth Marie, get on twitter girl!
Love the points on how to make a great blog. Thanks Chuck!
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
You punctured your poor programmer with a dart?!
  • david miller · 1 year ago
Just stumbled across this idea through a twitter link, it's a really good one. Count me in for finding some new gems
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
Thanks, David. Glad to have you join in.
  • Elizabeth Marie · 1 year ago
Aw I wish I could admit to being so adorably oblivious -however @lizzy7577 is my Twitter -for anyone who wants it. : )

@Mike Figliuolo Passe you say? Shoot - suppose I'll just have to take down all those unicorns and rainbows I just buried my house underneath in the name of holiday spirit. What a shame - and Happy Halloween!
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
Alright! Commenters talking to each other.
  • Laura · 1 year ago
I would not mind being one of the blogs visited or even the first I think the comments your readers leave could only help to improve my blog... Either way first last or somewhere in the middle I am in from both ends!
again awesome idea you have here!
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
Thanks, Laura--I think the readers here are going to be a great source of advice and support even for blogs that aren't featured at the time.
  • Le @ third on the right and co · 1 year ago
Hello there Mr C ... this is one dead set cooool idea - many congrats for thinking thru. I have participated in other 'support' type groups - I do find the newblog every day variety daunting ... I love teh concept of the 'two week' exposure - like a 'try before you buy' senario :)

In fact the Aussie Louisa from Where the Blog Are You, drew my attention to you. On ya Lou.

Anyways off to post a link back to the initial concept - as I am sure lots of Aussie bloggettes (we don't seem to have a lot of guys blogging) could see merit in this - cheers le
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
Thanks, Le--there are already a good amount of Aussie bloggettes on board, I think at least 5 or 6, so you're representing well so far.
  • Le @ third on the right and co · 1 year ago
here is the post Charles - with links intact - cheers le

  • Chuck · 1 year ago
Looks good, Le. It was stuck in the spam filter because of the "viagra" word. I think 99.999% of the time that means spam.
  • cog · 1 year ago
um, my blog has been described as "compelling for no particular reason."

    Is this an issue?
  • DeBorah Beatty · 1 year ago
I must have missed out somewhere - but how does one participate in this glorious fieldtrip? I'd love to toss mine in the mix if you just tell me how.
  • Melanie @ MelADramatic Mommy · 1 year ago
I really enjoy blogging and consider myself a newbie. A project like this will help me immensely with the areas I think my blog is deficient.
  • Chuck · 1 year ago
    Welcome aboard, then. : )
